Get your kitchen ready to sell: 10 simple steps
Clear the counters, clean everything until it shines, empty half of every cabinet, fix the small things, and let the light in. A clean, open kitchen helps buyers picture their own life there.
Why does the kitchen matter so much?
The kitchen is the heart of the home. It is where people cook, talk, and spend time together. Buyers know this, so they look at it closely.
The 10 steps
- Clear the counters. Keep only one or two things out.
- Empty half of every cabinet. Buyers open doors. Space feels like more storage.
- Clean inside the oven, the fridge, and the microwave.
- Shine the sink and the faucet.
- Fix what is broken: a loose handle, a dripping faucet, a light that does not work.
- Take magnets and papers off the fridge.
- Put away small appliances you do not use every day.
- Change old light bulbs to bright, warm ones.
- Add one fresh touch: a bowl of lemons or a small plant.
- Take out the trash and keep the kitchen smelling clean.
Do I need to remodel before I sell?
Usually no. Clean and fixed comes first. Before you spend money on big changes, let's look at what homes like yours sold for.
Then and now
In 2019 I shared kitchen ideas from a professional organizer. Today these are the steps I give my own sellers.
Questions people ask
What should I fix before selling my house?
Start with what buyers see first: the kitchen, the front door, and anything broken.
Should I paint the kitchen cabinets?
Sometimes. Ask me first, so you spend only where it helps.
Thinking about selling? I'm happy to help you. Just let me know.
