Grateful, 9 years later: what real estate taught me about thank you

QUICK ANSWER

In 2017 I wrote that I was thankful for waking up each day, for my family, and for work I love. Nine years later I am thankful for my mom, my children, and now a grandson, all healthy, and for still doing the work I love. The best part of real estate is still the moment someone holds the keys to their dream.

What was I thankful for in 2017?

I wrote it in Spanish, the week of Thanksgiving. I was thankful for the simple things. Waking up every morning. My children, my mom, and my sister healthy and moving forward. A job I go to with a smile.

I also wrote about the keys. The moment a new owner holds the keys to their home, the big smile, sometimes the tears. Many times I cried with them. Of course I did.

What am I thankful for today?

At this point in my life, I am thankful for many things. With time, with age, and with everything I have lived, the way I see life changes a little.

I am very thankful that I still have my mom. That my children and my grandson are healthy. Health is always a big blessing. I am thankful for the friends who became my extended family. And I am thankful that I can keep working in what I love, real estate, helping so many people reach their dreams by buying and selling property, opening their own business, and so much more.

Some things did not change at all. Many of my clients became my friends. They are still part of my life, and I am still part of theirs.

What did 21 years of real estate teach me about gratitude?

That a home is never only a house. It is a first step, a new city, a bigger dream, or a smaller and easier life. Every sale is somebody's next chapter, and I get to be part of it.

There is one moment I will never forget: a grown man crying because he could finally buy his first home, after many years of hard work. That moment always reminds me why I do this.

What does Thanksgiving look like for a Costa Rican in Florida?

In Costa Rica we don't celebrate Thanksgiving, so it is always interesting to celebrate it here. You get used to it. At my table there is always rice or a traditional Costa Rican dessert, and sometimes even picadillo. In the end, the best part is being together as a family, sharing, and remembering our family stories from Costa Rica.

Then and now

I first wrote "Dar gracias siempre" on November 18, 2017. Same heart, nine years later.
